New York | Tips
In times when all you hear about our economy is negative, we still seem to enjoy our free days during Easter. The single most popular destination of this year? New York City!

Are you heading there for the first time? Then we have a few great tips for you. They're also great for those of you who have been visiting this city before.

  • Try to stay at one location on a Friday afternoon between 3 and 7 p.m. The famous yellow cabs are doing their change of shifts, so it's almost impossible to get a cab. Of course, there is always the subway.
  • Check out Manhattan per bike! You'll see a lot you wouldn't normally see. And don't be afraid to be part of the traffic, cars will pay attention to you (meaning: they're not looking for a law-suit or damages claim). You'll find several bike rentals near and around Central Park and the different Piers.
  • Get your money on location (and not while you're still at home). When you're living outside of the US, your bank isn't likely to give you an advantageous exchange rate.
  • At many retailers, they'll give you the choice to pay in dollars or euros. Choose dollars, because this will be in your favor (usually).
  • Magnolia bakery, the place to get delicious cupcakes (they're famous for it). But you should definitely try their Magic Cookie Bar, which is a combination of chocolate, cocos, and walnuts. To die for.
  • NBC Studio Tour. A very fun and interesting tour through the studios of NBC in the heart of Manhattan. Check out the studio where Saturday Night Live is being taped and where Dr. Oz walks around. After the tour you have the possibility to become a star yourself. Read the news or be the weather girl! Make sure to be charming, because your performance is aired throughout the building!
  • Looking for tranquility in the buzzing city? Opt for The James hotel in Soho, an oasis of peace and quiet.
  • Want to make your clothing almost made-to-measure? There is a tiny shop in Grand Street (around number 30) where they can alter your clothing fast, perfect and cheap.

Restaurants

  • Tao - A New York hotspot for many years. Reserve in time, preferably a month in advance.
  • Mr. Chow - A culinary Chinese place which certainly isn't your ordinary Chinese restaurant.
  • Bistro Moderne - A restaurant that is very suitable when going to the theatre. Located in the middle of the theatre district and they even serve special theatre menus.
  • Buddakan - Spotted in Sex in the City. An impressive restaurant where they serve platters for the entire table. Tip: Tuna Pizza!
  • Fred's (@Barney's warehouse) - Want to experience the Gossip Girl feeling? Go for lunch at Fred's, simple but tasty dishes in Uptown NYC. All the 'housewives of NYC' will accompany you.
  • Fig and Olive - This restaurant is located in the Meatpacking District, where you should definitely have brunch. All dishes are prepared with the best olive oil. The menu consists of different 'tapas'.
  • The River Cafe - The restaurant which fairly certain has the best at Manhattan. Located in Brooklyn, the atmosphere makes you think about the early days. The food is great too. Not the cheapest choice, but the experience is worth it though.
  • Balthazar/ Pasti's - Two restaurants from the same chain with almost the same menu. Not in the mood for breakfast at the hotel? Go here.
  • Dos Caminos - A Mexican restaurant where you'll find the best quesadilla's in town. Located all over the city.
  • Looking for a restaurant to celebrate Easter? Check out this website, where you can define your preferred location and price to find the perfect spot. Reservations can be made directly (all of the restaurants above are listed).
